Antarctica was spared from Covid's grip until December of 2021 when 36 people at the Chilean Bernardo O'Higgins research station were found to have the virus. While that outbreak was contained, there was also concern the Covid virus could infect Antarctica's wildlife population and spread. Antarctica's waters and lands are home to 235 animal species.
DW News notes Antarctica was the last continent on the planet to be COVID-19 free. Chile's military said in December 2020 that dozens of people had been infected at its Bernardo O'Higgins base, including army personnel and civilian contractors.
